Where Did The Weekend Go?

Seems like we just slept the whole thing away this weekend…

Today was a bit of a lazy day, waking up at 10:30 when Layla finally got tired of waiting for us to get her and started yelling for us. I guess we should be grateful for her letting us sleep so long… but we both still wanted the other to get up and get her. Seeing as I was feeling a bit guilty about sleeping the whole day away yesterday, I made the first move. I got Layla… and threw her on the bed with Tamie. =)

After getting both girls up, I made breakfast. A little creation I like to call… ham and cheese on toast. It’s even more delicious than it sounds. Tamie skipped it to go jogging, but Layla and I chowed down on the good food. While Tamie was out, we watched some Crocodile Hunter DVD’s. Layla’s choice – I swear! So much for Sesame Street, eh?

After Tamie came back, I thought we could go down to the ritziest part of Tokyo where all the rich people converge to buy overpriced handbags and jewelry. Layla was excited to take the train, Tamie was excited to get some jewelry, but I wanted to go because aside from all the glitz and glamour, there’s an awesome toy store there. In the end, however, we postponed our trip until next week because it was already getting late, but mostly because of laziness.

So instead, we went for lunch down at Vina Walk, as is becoming our usual Sunday routine. As such, we had to stop at the pet store so Layla could almost play with dogs, stop at the baby floor so she could almost play with babies, stop at the shoe store so Tamie could almost buy some boots, and then starbucks so we could all drink some overpriced coffee/fraps. Unfortunately, Tamie was hit with a bit of a bug and wasn’t feeling too well, so we came home a bit early. Our timing was good, though, because Layla crashed as we came in the door.

An hour later, we were off to the grocery store to buy some food for dinner. Frozen pizza – another delicacy I whip up when the mood strikes me. Tamie, not feeling well and really not feeling like pizza, whipped up a batch of her world-famous potato and pumpkin chips. While the food was cooking, Layla complained about being hungry. So I gave her an apple. A big apple. An apple almost the size of her head. And she loved it. She was either really hungry, or it was really good. That, in conjunction with the pizza and chips, made for a great Sunday meal. In other words, we feasted like royalty.

I’m Getting Too Old For This S…

Last night was a reunion of sorts with a couple former colleagues. We went for dinner, a couple drinks, and then … the rest is a bit of a blur. I don’t remember taking a train but I do remember sitting in a familiar bar near the old office. A couple of Scottish guys. Looking for a taxi at some point. Like I said… A bit of a blur.

I woke up on a sidewalk, soaked from the rain, by a Japanese guy wondering what I was doing. I was wondering the same. At least I still had my glasses this time. Luckily I also had my handy, dandy GPS-enabled google phone to tell me where I was… and I was in the middle of nowhere.

A long, cold walk to the nearest train station and I was on my way home. The only bright side to the odious funk that was coming from my body was it guaranteed me lots of room on the train.

I finally crawled home around 7am, just in time to take the garbage out before passing out on the couch. Luckily, or not, Tamie and Layla were staying in Isehara with the in-laws. They came back around 1:30 in the afternoon, to find me curled up on the couch dying.

We eventually went out to get Tamie a lifesaving, jogging tracking, all-around awesome google phone of her own. I hope she doesn’t ever need to use it to save her own life, but I feel much more secure in knowing she’s got one now. We’ll get Layla one soon too… she’s already a year behind her peers in the cell-phone area.

At any rate, I’ve given up drinking. Nah, that’s a bit rash. I will, however, give up waking up in random neighbourhoods with no idea how I got there.

Just One of Those Days

The day started out good today – we were up early(ish) and Layla was pleasant(ish). It seemed like things were going to go well. The sun was shining, the baby was eating breakfast, the wife was getting ready for work. Everything was on time.

Then I checked Layla’s temperature.

37.3 degrees.

Hardly anything to be concerned about, unless your daycare considers 37.5 to be a fever and reason to keep your contagious child away from the other children. Instead of panicking, we let Layla finish breakfast, get dressed and ready to go like nothing was wrong. It’s not really a problem if we ignore it, right?

Before we left, I checked Layla’s temperature one more time. 37.0. Good enough for me, so I grabbed her and dumped her on the daycare staff and was gone before they had a chance to stick a thermometer in her armpit. Luckily, they never called all day so I guess she survived.

On my way to work, I reserved a seat on the train home, timing it so I could meet Tamie and Layla, who would be coming from Grandma’s house. Thankfully, there was a seat available. Again, except for the minor temperature hiccup, everything was going smoothly…

Work seemed to go well, until my boss had a meeting with a customer. 30 minutes after they started their meeting, we got a call reporting a bug. Not a big deal – all part of the job. A short while after that, another phone call. Another bug. Two bugs for the two developers still in the office – easy. Comes with the territory. Luckily, there were no more phone calls after that…

All was quiet… 6:00 rolled around and the other developer was about to go home… of course, that’s when errors start happening and we realize that our database server is out of disk space. Oops.

For the next two and a half hours, we were knee deep in investigations without a sniff of leaving. Around 8:47, we had done enough (or were tired enough) to feel it was safe to go home. Now, 8:47 might sound late but it’s really not that bad, compared to some nights. The bad part was the colleague who wanted to leave at 6 — he got to the office early (7:30am) today. On top of that, my seat on the train to meet Tamie and Layla was for 8:30… argh.

So I didn’t meet Tamie and Layla. What I did meet was a rainstorm when I finally got back to Ebina. And here I was without my umbrella. And without any money to buy one.

I headed over to the bank to withdraw some money only to find it locked up tight. Here’s something (else) that doesn’t make sense to me about this country — ATM’s that are not 24 hours. After banking hours, I have to pay an extra fee to withdraw money, but only while the ATM’s are actually open. I’m not sure what time they close but I am sure that it’s before 10pm.

So I ran home in the rain, cutting through the grocery store that I would have bought some dinner at, had I any money. Luckily, the torrential downpour stopped by the time I got to the other side of the store. I walked home, grateful that the storm blew over quickly.

At the apartment, there were three packages waiting for me to carry upstairs. Tamie had ordered diapers from Amazon and they arrived with another, thankfully smaller, mystery package. I decided to take the elevator, double-checking that I pushed 3. I didn’t want to wake up anymore unsuspecting neighbours.

I dropped the packages at home, took some money from Tamie, and then headed back out to get some grub to eat. We needed cereal and milk for tomorrow morning, and I needed a beer tonight.

As I stepped around the corner, on my way to the grocery store, I stepped in a huge puddle. Just great. I hope the waterproofing I put on those new shoes works.

After picking up a couple things, I headed back outside to go home. The rain had started again… no, sorry – the STORM had started again. The cats and dogs from the previous drizzling were huddled under a bench while the wolves and tigers fell from the sky. The rain drops were so big they hurt when they hit you. Yah, it was rough.

By the time I made it home, I was soaked. A quick change of clothes and a quick beer and food later, and I’m here typing this tale of woe.

Luckily, tomorrow is another day. Here’s hoping it’s one of those other days.

Shopaholics Anonymous

To say that this weekend was a bit lazy would be an understatement. In fact, to say that this weekend was a lot lazy would still be an understatement.

Saturday we woke up around 1… in the afternoon. Layla was up until 11 the previous night, but she’d never slept in this late. I would have gladly slept in another hour if I wasn’t worried the poor kid was dead, or worse. Luckily she was still sawing logs, sweating up a storm in the process. I think she might have had a bit of a fever early in the morning and had sweat it out by mid afternoon. It’s why we kept her up late the previous night — score one for forward thinking parenting!

Our plan for the day was to go out and get some shoes. Big plans, to be sure, but we were already behind schedule. After getting cleaned up and having breakfast we were off to Machida for some shopping fun. If there’s one thing I love, it’s shoe shopping. Especially with my two favourite girls…

Surprisingly, we found Tamie’s shoes at the first place we hit. It was amazing, like nothing I’d ever seen before. She didn’t even need to try on more than three pairs of shoes before deciding. Twas’ a sign of things to come, or so I’d hoped, as we headed off to find my shoes…

The last pair of shoes I got here, they didn’t have my size so I had to get it delivered through the mail. I had tried some on for size, and they fit pretty well, so thought the ones coming in the mail would be as comfortable. After a couple days of wearing them, trying to break them in properly, I found they still were a bit small. To this day, they are still one of the most uncomfortable pair of shoes I’ve ever bought. With that in mind, I was determined to find a pair of shoes, in stock, that we could try on and buy… no matter how long it took.

I found a pair that seemed decent, and we asked the salesguy for a size 27, the sizes here being the size of your foot in cm… I’m still not exactly sure what the size 10 I wore in Canada actually represented, as my foot is neither 10 centimeters or 10 inches. He brought them and they were a bit snug, to say the least. We tried a 27.5 and again they were a bit small. Finally the guy looked at my current shoes, which were supposedly size 10 and said that should be a 28… I tried on a 28… and voila – a much better fit. Especially compared to the torturous shoes I’d been wearing. We walked out of that, the first store we hit for my shoes, successful in our search for shoes. Two for two!

To celebrate, we headed off for some ice cream. Layla told me she didn’t want a big ice cream, but she wanted me to have a big ice cream. How could I say no to that? She ended up taking all the parts of my parfait that she wanted, leaving me with her leftovers. Regardless, it was a decent snack and turned out to be most of our dinner. It turned out to be later than we thought and we were a bit stuffed, even after looking around for a while after the ice cream. We ended up at the outback for some steak salad… and some ice cream (for the kid) for dessert.

Today, we headed off for another trip to the park. Layla seems to love it there, and we love to take her. It’s the only grass field for miles, so it’s kind of a special place here… making it kind of a busy place too. One interesting thing about the grass park is the hill, where kids use cardboard as toboggans and slide down it. It sure looks ghetto, but I guess when there’s no snow you have to make do with what you got. One lady even tricked out her cardboard by putting plastic handles on it. Very impressive, indeed.

At the park, we kicked a ball around before heading off to the playground for some slide fun, only to close out with a terrifying steam spray. The same steam spray Layla used to love to run through as a young(er) kid, she’s now deathly afraid of. I ended up carrying her through it, which is more than she let me do last time, so progress is being made, albeit slowly. Maybe someday she’ll be as brave as she was when she was a year old. Maybe.

As we were leaving the park, the chipper youngster chirped up with her suggestion of what to do next. “Starbucks!” The call for the green tea frappuccino was message enough that we go there far too often. Regardless, we went. Some parents mark lines on a wall to watch how their kids grow up — we take pictures at Starbucks. I figure in five years, I’ll send the pictures in to the marketing department and see if I can’t make a few bucks on all the money we spent there. It’s really more of an investment, in that respect.

While we were sucking back our drinks, Layla pointed out that we dress her like a bum. The knee of her pants, already sewn up once, had another hole from her skinning her knee one of any number of times. She was adamant that we buy her new pants, and we were more than happy to oblige. We went to the Gap where a nice saleslady got to practice her English with us. She showed us a great deal on a new line of pants — buy 2 pairs and get 20% off the purchase. Sounded good. The only problem — there’s no way I am going to shell out 9200 yen (100 bucks!) on pants for my kid that she’s either going to outgrow or rip in two months. Even with a 20% discount.

I checked a few other places while Layla played, but I couldn’t find anything decent for a decent price. Tamie took a look and found a couple options (I’ll admit, she’s a much better shopper than I am). Layla picked a pair, tried them on, and was so happy with them that she ended up wearing them moments after we bought them.

Not having spent enough money yet, we headed off to buy a new vacuum cleaner. It wasn’t exactly a spur of the moment thing, as every time I vacuumed Tamie would complain about the quality of my work, and I would complain about the quality of the tools I was equipped with. The fact that she complained about the tool whenever she vacuumed too was a clear indicator it was less the blame of the operator as it was the fault of the machine. One new vacuum cleaner later, and I have a happy wife and a cleaner apartment. How’s that for win-win?

The last thing we wanted to buy, a Google phone for Tamie, had to be put on hold because by the time we actually got around to it, the store had closed. It wasn’t a total loss, though, as it will give us something to do next week, if we don’t find something else to do first.

Who Nose What Lies A … Head?

I got home tonight at 9:30pm and Layla was still awake… Still awake and still full of energy. It being a Friday, I was more than happy to let her stay up. The later she stays up tonight, the longer we sleep in tomorrow. Plus, it gave me a chance to play with her for a little bit before bedtime (which is right now, 11pm :P )

I guess now is a good time to mention that somewhere in the last month or two, Layla has acquired to ability to somersault. She’s gotten really good at it too. And she knows it! The only reason I bring this up is because that’s what she wanted to do tonight…

Now, normally, when she somersaults with me watching, she tucks and rolls and I’m just there to catch her in case she ends up veering off course. The same was true for tonight. She was on the couch, somersaulting from one side to the next while I stood and watched, cheering her gymnastic feats.

Except one time.

One time, she tucked her head down and instead of somersaulting, she stopped. I leaned over to see what was wrong and BAM! Instead of tucking and rolling, she decided to jump up, connecting the hardest part of her skull with the softest spot of my nose.

As I held back the language (and the tears), Layla laughed… all the while Tamie wondered why I was hopping around holding my face. When the blood started pouring out my nostril, Tamie finally understood what, if not how it, had happened.

Layla, on the other hand, asked me if it was ketchup. I had to laugh. She proceeded to apologize between somersaults while I found a tissue to dry my tears and stem my bleeding.

What a little cutie. For now.
