Birthday Weekend

Happy Birthday, Tamie!

Saturday was Tamie’s birthday and we celebrated in class… at least that was the plan…

The girls stayed in Isehara on Friday, as Tamie had to work late and the grandparents were picking up Layla. Tamie also booked a haircut on Saturday morning so it was more convenient to just stay there. It gave me the opportunity to clean up the apartment for her birthday. How’s that for a good present, eh? The place was spotless… at least until Layla was back for more than five minutes. :)

For her birthday dinner, I booked a cruise on the Royal Wing in Yokohama. We headed out early to visit Motomachi for the tail end of their “Charming Sale” to let Tamie do what she does best… spend money!

After visiting a number of jewerly and clothing stores, we stopped at a cafe for fries before heading out to the docks to catch our ship. That’s when the rain started – not a huge downpour, but enough to get cold and wet.

At the dock, we noticed there were two weddings going on that night – at least, there were two girls in big, poofy white dresses at big parties… in this country, you never know if it’s a wedding dress or a fashion statement.

I picked up the tickets I reserved from the counter and the lady gave me the tickets and charged me for the meal. I was a bit surprised, as it was a lot cheaper than I was expecting, until I found out that we were booked for the buffet instead of the course dinner. No one asked when I called to make the reservation, and it was too late when I picked up the tickets – I don’t know if they just assumed I wanted the buffet because I had a kid or what, but it wasn’t exactly what I (or Tamie) had in mind. It did make things easier with Layla, though.

On board, we were shown to our table along with everyone else waiting in line. The usually polite, orderly people of Japan who line up for everything from trains to bread shops raced for the buffet. We went to grab some food, fighting young and old people alike. The chaos that ensued was ridiculous – there wasn’t even an attempt at order as people circled the buffet table in both directions, cutting into lines and reaching over each other to get egg rolls and meat buns.

During dinner, a lady entertainer came to the table and made a balloon animal for Layla. Layla watched in abject wonder and amazement mixed with a bit of fear and nervousness. She finally regained the ability to move once the show was over and the animal was Layla’s. She’s too funny sometimes.

After the meal was over (or the food was done), we headed to the “Sun Deck” to take a look around. The wind was blowing, the deck was wet and slippery, but luckily the rain didn’t pour too heavily… so it was fun, if cold. I played around with my camera while Tamie and Layla eventually went inside. I would say I took pictures, but none of them really turned out… so I “played with my camera” instead. :)

When all was said and done, we went and grabbed a late train home. The girls fell asleep on the train while I stood stoically after giving up my seat for an old lady. The ungrateful old bat didn’t even say thank you, as if she was expecting someone to just jump up and give her a seat… you’d think she’d have been around this country long enough to know better. No, I’m not bitter – not even after a once pregnant Tamie would complain daily about how people here would ignore her while she stood in front of the “priority” seats.

Today, we woke up late after everyone slept in… I love Sundays. We stuck around home for most of the afternoon, watching Sesame Street and playing with Layla. We headed out to the grandparents’ house for birthday celebrations with the whole family.

On the way to the house, we stopped by the local cake shop to pick up some cakes for everyone. As everyone picked out which cake they wanted, Layla pointed to the biggest one in the display. Her grandma, always anxious to spoil the kid, bought it without hesitation. Who’s birthday was it, anyways? Cake in hand, we headed back to the house where Tamie helped her mom prepare an always delicious sukiyaki meal. Beef and cake! It should be Tamie’s birthday every weekend! :D

So here’s hoping Tamie had as good a weekend as I did. The buffet was a tad less classy than expected and the weather could have co-operated better than it did, but overall I’d say it was a successful birthday weekend.

Happy (Belated) Valentine’s Day!

Saturday, we had a doctor’s appointment to ensure Layla’s health. She’d been coughing and sniffling all week and we were concerned that she was having a recurrence of her asthma attack, but luckily the doc said she was fine. Except for the extra medication we have to give her. We went for a nice breakfast after the appointment and then headed back home where I napped with Layla while Tamie went out for a massage. Tamie was meeting some friends for a girls’ night out that night, so I spent the evening with Layla. We visited the pet shop to see the dogs (they have a saint bernard puppy there now – only $2500!) and went to the kids’ floor in the department store so she could flirt with boys and play with toys… All in all, it was a good night for everyone, although Tamie might have had a bit of a headache the next morning ;)

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day and the custom here is for women to give chocolates to the men. So I had to meet as many girls’ as I could — we actually spent the day at Tamie’s folks’ place, heading over there in the afternoon to have a nice sushi dinner. We’d been planning on buying them sushi to thank them for the time they spent with Layla while she was in the hospital and the schedules all finally worked out. Nothing better than sushi, beer and chocolate! The perfect Valentine’s Day, I’d say.

Daycare Dancing, The Way It’s Meant To Be

On Friday, Tamie called me while I was going to work to ask if I had any idea why the carbon monoxide detector in our place would be going off. Surprisingly, I had no idea. The building maintenance guy had heard it going off and called Tamie to come and check it out. By the time she got back to the apartment, the alarm was silent and everything seemed normal. As a precaution, she called the gas company and they set up an appointment on the following day to come and investigate. We spent the night at home and Tamie even cooked with our gas stove, so I suspected it was just a false alarm.

Saturday morning, pre-8am, Tamie’s dad came over to wake us up bright and mostly early. He was going to stick around our place for the gas people coming over while we took Layla to her daycare event. Tamie’s mom joined us for the fun, and what fun it turned out to be. We were scrambling to get ready and made it with seconds to spare. As such, we got stuck in the back of the room, hidden behind the two hundred other parents, and the hundred or so tripods set up. I ended up standing so I could actually see, and record, the action.

Layla did a great job in her performance, obviously not shy to be on stage. Luckily she didn’t end up headbutting anyone with her performance, although I think she did whip herself in the face once or twice. At the end of the event, she was pretty excited and clearly quite pleased with how things turned out. Tamie, as is becoming usual, was so proud she cried.

After the event, we took Layla to a local waffle shop for a fruit covered waffle. She, instead, went after the yogurt that came with Tamie’s soup and sandwich. It wasn’t until after the yogurt was done that she looked at the blueberries, strawberries and bananas that covered the ice-cream topped waffle. I tried to eat my lunch quickly so I might get a sniff of that fruit, but alas, I was too late.

Once lunch was finished, we headed to Isehara to meet up with Tamie’s dad again. Layla seemed tired, probably from going to bed late, getting up early and dancing up a storm. She tried to sleep on me as I held her on the train… unfortunately for her, it was only a ten minute ride and we were in the car with grandpa in no time. He drove us up into the mountains to meet the rest of the family for a day of picking oranges. We cleaned one of the two trees assigned to the family, Layla proudly picking (and eating) several oranges herself. Tamie scooted up the tree to pick oranges off the central top and I, being the tallest, got the dubious honour of picking the oranges that she couldn’t reach around the edges. Teamwork – it’s a wonderful thing.

We were invited for sukiyaki at the grandparents’ house, and never one to turn down a good meal, I quickly said yes. We went back to the house to drop off the oranges and take a bit of a rest. Poor Layla fell asleep in the car, just before we pulled into the driveway. We were planning on going shopping and debated just leaving her in the car to sleep but thought better of it. As soon as I unbuckled her seatbelt, though, her eyes popped open and she was wide awake again. We went inside for some tea and potato chips that Layla found. While eating them, the poor kid told me to come with her and nap on the couch. It was pretty funny… “Take a nap! Take a nap! Please! On the couch!” she pleaded.

I put the exhausted kid down on her futon, the place she usually naps, and she almost fell asleep. When baa-baa suggested buying some cake, she popped up like a jack-in-the-box. She tried to get us all to go for cake, but we told her we were taking the car and going shopping. I could see the wheels turning in her head as she weighed the options. Cake or shopping. Tough choices at such a young age. In the end, she decided to come with us as we headed out to try to do some Christmas/clothes shopping.

We headed to the shopping centre with the biggest baby store to try and find some clothes for Layla. On the way, the poor kid fought the urge to fall asleep, losing the battle just as we pulled up to the store. We sat in the parking lot for a couple minutes as she sawed logs in the back seat. After ten minutes, I picked her up and carried her into the store. When she saw we were shopping, she immediately woke up and got her second (or, more precisely, fourteenth) wind.

As we entered the baby store, Layla wanted to head to the toy department right away but we cut her off and told her after the clothes shopping. It wasn’t until recently that we noticed that all of her pants seem to end just under her knee and her gut sticks out from under her shirt. She’s already a big kid, but wearing clothes that are too small just emphasize the fact that she’s a might bit bigger than the other kids in her age group. We ended up buying her a couple different pairs of pants and shirts, as there was a good sale on. We only lost track of her once in the store, when she disappeared to find the toy section she’d been pleading with us to see.

After buying a completely new wardrobe for the little princess, we went next door to Toys R Us to see if there was anything interesting for Christmas presents. It was no surprise that Layla didn’t just find one thing interesting – she found everything interesting. From the stuffed animals in the first corner of the store to the cars and trucks in the middle and the candies and drinks at the cash register. If it were up to her, she’d have every toy in the place. Luckily, it’s not up to her and we left with cash in our wallets and room in the car.

Before heading back home for dinner, we stopped to get groceries and, more importantly, meat. At the meat store, Layla found a package with Thomas the Tank Engine on it – she had no idea what was inside but knew that she wanted it. It turned out to be a package of sausages, which she was more than happy to chow down on.

Back in Isehara, we had a nice meal with the family, and I think everyone ate too much. I know I did. After supper, Hamster and Baa-baa wanted to take Layla to see the Christmas lights on one particular house in the neighbourhood. I went along, camera in hand, to see the sight. It was quite a sight, indeed. Even in Canada, it would stick out. Layla loved it.

Farm Festival and a Day at the Park

Saturday was a day of a farm festival in Isehara, the city Tamie’s parents live in. They wanted to take Layla and we were more than happy to oblige – Tamie’s always excited to expose Layla to terrifying animals like mice and chicks. Layla seemed excited to go too, talking about how she wanted to see and pet rabbits at the fair.

After what should have been a quick stop at the hospital for Layla’s routine checkup for her asthma, delayed only by a swine flu outbreak in our city and a hospital computer system that went down, we were off to see the farm animals.

The festival was a bit bigger than last year’s, with a lot of people milling about like the livestock they were gawking at. Layla summed up all of her courage and milked a fake cow. Unfortunately with her courage sapped, by the time we got to the petting portion of the festival, she was scared stiff of all the animals running around her. Even the bunny she was so anxious to pet was terrifying.

Tamie’s sister joined us in the petting pen. She tried to get Layla to pet a rabbit to no avail. Even grandma was getting into the act — she promised the cowardly little girl popcorn if she could touch a baby goat just once. Layla, too smart for her own good sometimes, knew grandma would be getting her popcorn regardless and ignored the goat completely. So instead of petting animals, we went and got some festival food. And popcorn.

After the festival we went back to the house to have a deliciously homemade Sukiyaki meal. Twice in two weeks! Sorry Tamie, but I love it. Layla crashed on the way home, ragdolling in my arms before we made it back to the apartment. I bet she dreamed of ferocious bunnies and scary chicks.

Sunday was almost a typical Sunday. A typical Sunday involves waking up late, rollerblading, Tamie jogging at some point and starbucks-ing. We woke up late-ish, Layla waking up around 10.

I rollerbladed 8.34km, hitting a maximum speed of 25km/h and maintaining an average speed of around 12km/h… yep, my google phone is amazing! =) Highlight of the trip was almost running over a praying mantis! I’d never seen one before and wasn’t sure if what I saw was really a praying mantis and not just a green leaf on the sidewalk (it’s hard to make out such small things when you are flying at 12km/h!). When I got home I asked Tamie in disbelief if Japan had such cool bugs and the disgust on her face told me yes.

After I showered, we were getting ready to go out to starbucks. It was such a nice day outside, I suggested we head out somewhere else, and I knew the perfect place. Instead of our regular trip to Vina Walk in search of musicians, magicians, dogs, babies and frappuccinos, we headed out to the park we used to frequent. With Layla being bigger, she was able to use the playground jungle gym with a lot more confidence and independence.

Hours were spent playing with slides and rope bridges, balls and bubbles, running and laughing. It was a good time and great to see Layla having such a good time amongst the thousand or so other kids at the park.
