Tamie-less Weekend

This weekend was Tamie’s first full weekend of having to work. I got the honour of taking care of the two little ones during that time. Actually, Julia went to daycare on Sunday so I guess you could say I have 1.5 kids for 2 days.

Sisters

Saturday was a scorcher and just opening the door outside was like opening an oven door (not that I’ve ever opened an oven door before =). What better way to spend the day than to take the kids to the park? Layla was excited to go back since she had such a great time last time I took her so how could I say no? I even took the baby carrier we bought so I could carry Julia around the park with her sister — what could go wrong?

Layla biked to the park while I pushed the stroller beside her, doing my best to shade Julia from the unrelenting sun. We did lather on sunscreen but I had my doubts that SPF 50 was strong enough. We made it to the convenience store beside the park before needing to stop for a drink, where I realized I only had 1000 yen to last the day. That’s 6 bottles of tea, or 4 bottles of tea, and Layla’s snack and yogurt drink she wanted at the convenience store. Luckily the money lasted until we got home. Barely.

At the park, there were few kids – most sensible parents probably took their children to pools, oceans or inside air conditioned theaters. The rest of us were baking their little ones in 35~40 degree heat. That didn’t stop Layla from doing her best to have a good time. She ran, jumped, climbed, and slid her way to happy. I took Julia with her for a while but the baby is like a furnace and combining that with my already sweaty chest made for two uncomfortable Estey’s. The baby carrier lasted no more than 10 minutes before I put Julia on my lap to let her cool down.

I think the lack of kids was a bit of a disappointment for Layla so I made up for in and we spent more time playing together – I took her to a gazebo so Julia could sleep in the shade and we played catch with a frisbee and a ball. Her frisbee tosses are a bit off center as she lets go a little too late – I tried to do the fatherly thing and teach her how to throw better (because I am the epitome of what a frisbee tosser should be) but she ignored me and continued to throw it away. At one point I was giving Julia some attention and I swear the frisbee hit me square in the gut at 100 miles an hour. I got to thinking she knew how to throw it and just liked seeing me chase it into the hot sun every time.

Frisbee

We did get a few visitors in our little gazebo. An old lady came by completely covered to protect herself from the sun and complaining about the heat. She offered Layla a plum before heading back out into the sun. A giant bug came by, digging through the sand but we scared him away (ie. I poked it into a direction away from us so Layla wouldn’t have a heart attack). A mother and daughter came by and after a minute of shy awkwardness the two kids played with each other. When the kid’s father showed up they headed home leaving us alone again.

A BIG bug

We took the cue from the family and decided it was a good time to head back home after a full day at the park. Layla rode her bike home while Julia rode shotgun in the stroller. We got home, turned on the A/C, drank some more tea and relaxed. Julia passed out again and not long after, Layla went to lay down for what turned out to be a 2 hour nap. Tamie called to say she was coming home just as Julia woke up, so all she heard was crying in the background – timing is everything. When Tamie got back, we had a nice meal before putting the kids to sleepbed.

Sunday, Tamie took Julia to her office where the company has set up a daycare to help employees with families cope with the weekend shift so it was just Layla and I. Tamie’s sister and father invited us for lunch so we went to meet them for unagi (eel) at a restaurant where Hamster used to work as a student. It was a good lunch and I think everyone enjoyed. Afterwards we spent some time in Isehara before eventually coming back home.

Layla was excited at home because I’ve been busy setting up an htpc so I can stream videos onto our new TV. I finally got it working well enough that she could watch her new favourite show (Hi-5) on something bigger than an ipad. Despite being tired and at one point wanting to take a nap, she bounced around the living room rambunctiously as she sang and danced with the characters on the TV until Tamie called. We met Tamie and Julia at the station and we all went for a nice family dinner.

All in all, I’d say this was a successful weekend sans Tamie. We definitely missed her, but we survived. Here’s hoping the rest of the weekends over the next 3 months are equally survivable.

Saturday Pics

Sorry, no pics for Sunday – without Julia, I had no need for a backpack (for the first time in 4+ years!) so forgot my camera at home.

Hot Weekend

This past week was hot and this weekend was no exception.

Saturday was Tamie’s last day of maternity leave and we wanted to do something together as a family. Her company shifted their weekend to Thurday/Friday instead of Saturday/Sunday to try to help balance power consumption in and around Japan. That meant it will be our last weekend together for the next few months.

We decided to go to Yokohama, a place we’ve often enjoyed in the past, to spend the day together. There’s a small zoo nearby that we thought sounded like a good way to spend a few hours before heading off to high tea. It wasn’t until we actually climbed up the hill to the zoo and started walking around that the heat made us rethink our plans. It was Tamie who suggested bailing on the zoo, so if the heat is bothering her you, it must be hot! On the way out, we got Layla some kakigori (かき氷, ie. shaved ice)

Firefox Out

We headed back to the train station and changed from the planned high tea to a short stop for gelato. We weren’t the only ones with that idea as the gelato place was packed. Regardless, it was the best idea we had all day as we all enjoyed the Italian treat.

Sunday, Tamie went to work and I got the day with the kids. Luckily, we all survived. I ended up getting Layla on her bike and taking the girls to the park nearby where we spent most of the day. Layla played on the jungle gym while I sat and played with Julia in the shade. We went to toss a ball and frisbee together, but Layla eventually wanted to go back to run and play on the slides and such. She did meet some new friends and didn’t want to leave so I sat with Julia and let Layla have her fun.

When we finally came home, Layla was so excited after such a good day. She wanted to go to her favourite restaurant for dinner and I, of course, agreed. We sat on the couch with Julia and read a couple books before Layla decided she was too tired to read a book and went to lay down. I put Julia on the floor to play with her and she promptly rolled over, struggled to reach for a toy that was just out of her grasp and then she too dozed off.

Julia Out

Around 19:00, I had to wake up both kids so we could go meet Tamie at the restaurant. That’s when the waterworks started, both kids trying to outcry the other. I thought if Tamie walked in the door at that moment she’d think I must have had a pretty rough day. Layla did calm down enough to get her shoes on and by the time we were walking to the restaurant she’d started laughing again. Julia was cranky until her Mom showed up, bringing a big smile to Tamie’s face.

A Weekend To Remember

This weekend we rented a car and drove down to Nagano to enjoy some time away from the bustling city of Ebina. The weather looked iffy at first but ended up being quite nice. It was a great time!

Saturday morning, we got up early and Tamie went to pick up the car while I got the kids ready to go. We were packed and gone by just after 9 in the morning! It’s sometimes difficult to get Layla out the door that early for daycare!

Our Ride
Our Ride! 1000cc’s of Pure Japanese Power!

The drive down was uneventful, but on the way we stopped at a place called Kurumayamasantou, which is a ski resort in the Winter but open for hikers in the Summer. We took two chairlifts up to the top, where we had a look around and then a quick bite to eat on top.

At The Top
Made it!

After a busy day exploring the mountain, we headed off to check in at the hotel. We got our room, dropped our bags and went out to explore around the hotel grounds.

The hotel sits right next to a small lake so we headed down to the waterfront to take a look around. It was here I introduced Layla to the joy of throwing rocks into water. She really got into the whole thing, collecting rocks and trying to toss them as far as she could.

Big Fish
How big was the fish again?

We took a bit of a stroll around the lake but had to cut it short because our dinner was waiting for us. We had a 17:30 reservation at the restaurant in the hotel, followed by a 19:00 reservation on a night-time tour to see fireflies. Luckily, we just made it for both.

The dinner was a multi-course French deal which turned out to be a pretty decent meal. Layla had a giant kid’s meal which she ate most of in her attempts to earn her dessert.

The firefly tour was a 45 minute bus ride up to an area where fireflies were prominent. Unfortunately there was a festival on that same weekend, so not only were there a lot of fireflies but also a lot of people! Luckily, Layla was so excited to see the fireflies that we barely noticed the crowds.

The bus ride back to the hotel was a muted affair as everyone was tired. That is, until I reached down to check my phone and noticed it was gone! It must had fallen out of my pocket at some point in the evening! D’oH! Tamie tried calling it but there was no answer… later on, the phone called back but when Tamie picked up there was no one speaking on the other end. When I talked into the phone, it hung up. Too weird.

When we stopped at the hotel, Layla said she had a stomach ache so I carried her into the hotel. As we waited for the elevator, all I heard was “Braaapp!” as my shirt got soaked in regurgitated giant kid’s meal.

Once we were back in the room, we got Layla cleaned up, called Docomo to suspend my phone service, and then Tamie and Layla went to bath. I used Tamie’s phone to change all my passwords because the phone I lost wasn’t just a smart phone, it’s a really smart phone that remembered my passwords.

With nothing else we could do about the phone and worried about Layla, we turned in a bit early for the night.

Sunday morning, we woke up bright and early — earlier than we’d ever woken up, I think. We headed down for breakfast, dropping the messy clothes from the previous night in the laundry room on the way. The buffet breakfast was quite a large spread, but also quite popular. We had to line up just to get in!

Once the breakfast was done, we checked out of the hotel and headed out for another day of hiking fun. Tamie drove us to another of her favourite spots where we followed a path up a mountain, past a few horses and lots of cows.

Before we got started, I strapped Julia to my chest and shortly there after she peed on me! Nice way to start the day… a quick trip back to the car and a change of clothes later (luckily we’d washed the puke shirt or I’d have had a tough decision to make :| ) and we were off for a nice day of hiking.

We walked up a mountain trail for what must have been a couple of hours, we reached a shop at the top of the mountain and celebrated with some muffins and ice cream. Well worth the trip, I assure you.

Mountain Top 2
Got to the top!

The way back was a lot brisker of a pace (going downhill will do that). We stopped at the small shop beside the parking lot to feed Julia and Layla before driving off to another, smaller area for more hiking.

The sun was setting when we stopped for Soba on our way back to the highway. The drive back to Ebina was quiet as four tired travelers made their way home… quiet, save for the 5 month old baby screaming for the first hour…

All in all, despite the few bumps along the way, the trip was a fantastic time and a good pre-cursor to what will hopefully be a fun-filled Summer.

Another Birthday Weekend!

Just wanted to send a Happy Birthday to my old man back home – Layla was so excited it was her Chinni’s birthday that she wanted to call to see what presents he got… and to wish him a happy birthday too, of course!

After the conversation, Tamie went to meet a friend and I got to look after the girls. She was worried, I was thrilled. I took the two to the park, letting Layla get some more bike riding experience under her belt. She still loves to ride the thing so I am trying to get her on it as much as possible.

On the way to the park we saw a big snake in one of the rice fields. Despite my immediate urge to go Crocodile Hunter and make a grab for it, the smarter part of my brain told me to leave it be… that, and the fact Layla was pedaling like crazy to get away from it.

When we got to the park, I took Julia and followed Layla around as she ran, jumped, climbed, bounced, slid, etc. on everything and anything she could. Where she gets the energy, I wish I knew. The kid is also growing quite fearless, happily climbing up things that just a few months ago were terrifying for her. I’m quite happy to see that, although now feeling a bit useless. At least now I don’t have to try to squeeze in any kiddie doors to accompany her anywhere. =)

Around 3:30, we headed home to clean up, feed Julia and prepare to meet Tamie. Tamie had met her friend in Yokohama, so we went down to meet her. Once there, we decided to take Julia on her first boat ride. We took a “Sea Bass”, which is essentially a bus on the water to Yamashita Park where Layla and Tamie raced around like school girls on a field trip. Julia and I coolly followed behind taking in all the sights and sounds.

On The Boat

After the sun started setting, we decided to grab some grub and ended up at a restaurant in Chinatown where we had a small 8 course meal. We ate our fill and weren’t even hungry an hour later.

Today, the Canucks won so we could do anything Tamie wanted. We ended up in a rose garden in Mukogaoka Yuen, a 30 minute train ride followed by a 20 minute walk away. Despite the cloudy weather and chance of rain, it turned out to be a nice time.

In The Garden

Best part of the day was dinner – after much debate, we decided that Tamie would make pizza! Despite the pizza being really good, that wasn’t what I was referring to. Instead, take a gander at this video of Layla, experiencing her first fizzy drink that she didn’t immediately reject for being “too spicy.”

All in all, another great weekend with the family. For more, check out picture in the gallery!
