Another Birthday Weekend!

Just wanted to send a Happy Birthday to my old man back home – Layla was so excited it was her Chinni’s birthday that she wanted to call to see what presents he got… and to wish him a happy birthday too, of course!

After the conversation, Tamie went to meet a friend and I got to look after the girls. She was worried, I was thrilled. I took the two to the park, letting Layla get some more bike riding experience under her belt. She still loves to ride the thing so I am trying to get her on it as much as possible.

On the way to the park we saw a big snake in one of the rice fields. Despite my immediate urge to go Crocodile Hunter and make a grab for it, the smarter part of my brain told me to leave it be… that, and the fact Layla was pedaling like crazy to get away from it.

When we got to the park, I took Julia and followed Layla around as she ran, jumped, climbed, bounced, slid, etc. on everything and anything she could. Where she gets the energy, I wish I knew. The kid is also growing quite fearless, happily climbing up things that just a few months ago were terrifying for her. I’m quite happy to see that, although now feeling a bit useless. At least now I don’t have to try to squeeze in any kiddie doors to accompany her anywhere. =)

Around 3:30, we headed home to clean up, feed Julia and prepare to meet Tamie. Tamie had met her friend in Yokohama, so we went down to meet her. Once there, we decided to take Julia on her first boat ride. We took a “Sea Bass”, which is essentially a bus on the water to Yamashita Park where Layla and Tamie raced around like school girls on a field trip. Julia and I coolly followed behind taking in all the sights and sounds.

On The Boat

After the sun started setting, we decided to grab some grub and ended up at a restaurant in Chinatown where we had a small 8 course meal. We ate our fill and weren’t even hungry an hour later.

Today, the Canucks won so we could do anything Tamie wanted. We ended up in a rose garden in Mukogaoka Yuen, a 30 minute train ride followed by a 20 minute walk away. Despite the cloudy weather and chance of rain, it turned out to be a nice time.

In The Garden

Best part of the day was dinner – after much debate, we decided that Tamie would make pizza! Despite the pizza being really good, that wasn’t what I was referring to. Instead, take a gander at this video of Layla, experiencing her first fizzy drink that she didn’t immediately reject for being “too spicy.”

All in all, another great weekend with the family. For more, check out picture in the gallery!

What A Week…

Last Sunday, we got news of Tamie’s Aunt suddenly passing away and had to head to Nagano for a funeral on Thursday. We took the kids via shinkansen (ie. bullet train) the night before the service and stayed overnight at a small hotel. We came back directly after the service and got home very late Thursday night. This was the second funeral in Japan we’ve been to and it’s never easy – hopefully it will be the last one we have to go to for a long time.

Friday, my company had an inaugural poker game between colleagues and it was a big hit. I don’t know that we played by all the right rules but no one complained and everyone there seemed to have a great time… even if only one guy had any luck. Unfortunately that one guy was not me.

Saturday was raining so we couldn’t do anything outside, so we went to the beach… because right next to the beach is the aquarium where we had a day of fish and fun. Layla always enjoys seeing animals so long as they are behind glass or cage, so she had a blast. This time, though, she even touched TWO fish at the touching pool. Her smile after touching those fish was so big you’d think she just won the lottery… and in some ways, she just might have. Conquering one of her many fears is definitely a great accomplishment.

Today (Sunday) was the day of Layla’s birthday party at her Baba and Jiji’s house. It started out with us meeting Jiji at Hon-Atsugi so he could take her to see a kid’s stage show. She’d been excited to see the show for many weeks leading up to it and even this morning she was raring to go… she made it half-way through before she wanted to leave. When I asked her after if she had fun, she says she enjoyed but next time she wants her Mom to come too. Just one more fear to conquer, I guess.

While the show was on, Tamie and I did some shopping and picked up a few things for the birthday girl. She was getting spoiled, but a girl only turns 4 once, right? Or twice in this case since it’s actually not her birthday yet… once we had a hula hoop, a set of tennis-like rackets, and some sparklers we headed over to the grandparent’s house for the party. That’s where we found out that even if the show must go on, Layla didn’t have to stay.

We celebrated her birthday with a some cake and tea, followed by opening presents, followed by a big Sukiyaki (BEEF!) dinner. It was a great time and Layla was quite happy with all the gifts from everyone. She told me “Since my birthday is really in 3 days, maybe I’ll get another cake, eh? Maybe?” All I could do was laugh and answer back with another “maybe.”

Back In Japan

We’re back home and trying to get life back to some semblance of normalcy- not an easy task when you have a jet-lagged three year old who wakes up at 3am. Luckily we came back just in time for Golden Week, the wonderful time of year where companies shut down. Timing, as they say, is everything.

I’m working on uploading the pictures from the trip… there’s a lot of them. Stay tuned.

Story of the day:

When I woke Layla up this morning, instead of grumbling and groaning, she asked “Where did Chinni go?” I asked her what she was dreaming about and she said she was showing him her new dance move. She ended her story with “I guess I miss Chinni, eh?” I guess she dreams in English, at least sometimes.

Story of the week:

After returning from Japan a few cookies heavier than when I left, I decided on Saturday to go rollerblading… ended up wiping out, scratching up my knees, elbow and knuckles. Layla told me I needed to be more careful. Sunday, I decided to try my luck again and… ended up wiping out again – more blood poured from my elbow and this time my knuckle swelled up like a balloon. Layla told me I needed to buy some knee pads and elbow pads and to be more careful. Turns out my finger is fractured. Morale of the story: Don’t exercise, it’s hazardous to your health.

That’s all for now. Will try for more regular updates from here on out, although typing is a bit of a pain with this splint on my finger.

Smart Kid

Chinni and Layla are currently playing Xbox 360… Chinni suggested playing soccer. Layla’s response?

“I want to play running because I’m good at it.”

Priceless.

More Pictures Posted

Been a bit of a busy weekend – we’ve been trying to prepare for our trip back to Canada (only 6 more sleeps!). Not much of a story to tell though, so instead I’ll just post a picture that links to the picture galleries.
