Long Weekend In Hakone

There was a long weekend here in Japan and we took advantage, renting a car and heading up to Hakone for the weekend. We booked a room at the Prince Hotel, showing up in the early afternoon, giving us enough time to catch a concert, check out the hotel grounds and grab some dinner.

The next day we hit up a nice breakfast, checked out the on-site aquarium (which turned out to be pretty decent), splash around in the water for a bit, summit the mountain and then get a good lunch on the lake. The sun was hot on the ground but on top of the mountain it was foggy and windy, which translated into a chilly (or refreshing, depending on who you ask) experience.

Layla fell asleep on top of the mountain, shivering in my arms. I wrapped her in my shirt, for whatever that could offer, and we took a look around while she slept. She was out for quite a while, not even waking up when we got on the cable car. It wasn’t until we were almost back at the hotel that her head popped up, eyes wide open and she said without missing a beat “Not windy anymore! No more chilly!”

The Golden Week That Was

Golden Week has just ended and I am sick. Not sick of having time off, just getting over a feverish, stuffy-headed cold.

A quick recap of the events, more for my memory than anything else:

Saturday – Hospitals. Lots of hospitals. Both Layla and Tamie are getting healthy and news is looking good on all counts. Thank goodness for that.

Sunday – Spent the day in Ebina, looking around. We headed to a park with a 75m slide, found a temple we knew nothing about, and hit up Starbucks for our weekly(?) fraps.

Monday – Went clam-digging with the in-laws. About a million other people had the same idea and we were stuck in a huge crowd – luckily the ocean is large and we all fit. Layla decided she wasn’t afraid of the ocean anymore and ended up having a blast. I think this is where I got sick.

Tuesday – Headed down to Enoshima for the first aquarium/beach visit of the season. Enjoyed the dolphin show with another million people – Layla didn’t cry and was quite proud of the fact. I was quite proud later when we left the aquarium and she wanted to play on the beach, fearless of the waves that petrified her only a year ago.

Wednesday – Went to an outlet mall in Minami-Machida called Grandberry Mall. Found out that I’m too big for even the XL pants. Shamed and sick, I went to bed early this night.

Quiet Weekend, Except For The Coughing

Layla’s been a bit under the weather recently, her nose bubbling more than usual and her cough getting worse every day. We decided to take it easy this weekend in the hopes of her getting a bit better with a couple days to recuperate. As it’s Sunday night now and the poor kid is in bed hacking up a lung, I fear we didn’t succeed. Tomorrow morning, we’ll be back at the hospital — hopefully it’ll be a quick trip.

As for the weekend, Saturday we headed up to Machida to do a bit of shopping, but mainly to check out a fruit parlour Tamie knew of. We were going to hit up the usual green tea ice cream place, but wanted to try something different and this place was actually pretty decent. It being strawberry season, they have a lot of specials on — Layla wanted the strawberry sandwiches which were actually strawberries and whip cream between two slices of white bread… with pepper on it!

Today, with Layla coughing even more than yesterday, we didn’t go anywhere but grocery shopping. Tamie had a date with a masseuse tonight, so I stayed home with Layla. She wanted to play Candyland and, surprisingly, knew all the rules. I ordered pizza, which I thought was a good idea at the time… until I screwed up the order and ended up with two medium pizzas, one of which mistakenly had mayonnaise instead of tomato sauce! Never having tried a mayo pizza before, I wasn’t eager to taste it… but after shelling out the equivalent of 20 bucks for it, I had no choice. My openmindedness was rewarded with a lot of beer being drank as I choked down as much as I could, saving half the pizza for Tamie’s return. She, too, thought it was less than tasty. Layla seemed to like it though… kids these days…

Last Weekend Before India

Tamie needs to wake up in 5 hours to catch her 6:20am bus to get to the airport to catch her 11am flight. Fun times. Even funner is the week I’ll spend looking after Layla. Tamie’s folks won’t get her until Friday, so it’ll be a busy time for the next few days… not as busy as Tamie will be in India, mind you!

Friday I went out with some former colleagues and had a good time catching up. Tamie ended up staying at her parents’ house due to her dislike of seeing me inebriated, and I ended up sleeping on the couch due to aforementioned inebriation.

Saturday, I ended up meeting Tamie after her dental appointment and we headed to the grandparents’ house to pick up Layla together. Once we were reunited at the house, Tamie suggested we head out for an unplanned picnic up in Shonandaira. Sounded like a good idea to me, not realizing she meant up in the mountains instead of down on the beach. We drove through McDonald’s (what better picnic food is there?) before heading up to our picnic spot. Layla fell asleep on the way, lucky kid.

After we arrived, Layla wasn’t a very happy camper – judging by the volume of her snoring, we woke her up right in the middle of a deep sleep. She clung to me and tried to sleep as we ate, but after that she was quite happy. Especially after discovering a swing set and a double slide! She had a blast playing on the playground equipment!

We ended up exploring the area a little bit, hiking down a path quite a ways. Tamie didn’t want to go too far as she was worried Layla wouldn’t be able to make it back up and I’d have to carry her. We ended up going down a lot farther than I think she’d have liked, but much to both our surprises Layla made it down and back with little trouble. Only at the end of the hike back up did she stop and ask me to carry her — had she gone a few more meters, she’d have done the whole hike herself!

On our way back to drop off the car, we stopped to shop for some more clothes for Layla – she outgrows everything in a matter of weeks sometimes. Right now, it seems like all her pants don’t go down much past her knee! I think there must be a collection of long pants at the daycare or in the laundry, but for the life of me I can’t find it! So we went to the nearby baby store to pick some up… the kid chose PINK pants. I was shocked. PINK! Of all the colours… The only consolation was she also chose some camouflage cargo pants too.

We ended up staying for supper at the grandparents’ house, as they were worried their poor daughter would miss the taste of sushi in her week in India. I was thinking the same thing, taking Tamie for sushi back in Ebina, so it all worked out pretty well!

Sunday was a lazy day, as Sunday’s usually are. We shopped around for some things for Layla’s planned graduation into the next level of daycare and for some last minute things Tamie needed to pick up for her trip. Not very exciting, but at least it was somewhat relaxing.

Long Week, Short Weekend

After a week of long working days and longer working nights, I was happy to have the weekend upon us. But alas, when the going gets tough, it just gets tougher.

Friday morning, Layla had enough of a fever that the daycare wasn’t willing to take her (38 degrees! oh my!) Swine flu running rampant in our little town, and reports all over the news again caused great concern in Tamie and her parents, enough to take Layla to the hospital. The doctor, after poking and prodding, concluded that she was undetermined to have the flu (of any kind) and we’d have to come back on Saturday. At 9am. So much for sleeping in.

9am rolled around and we were scrambling to get to the hospital on time. Arriving just after 9:07, I was happy to see that there weren’t a million parents with kids in masks. Who ever thought one would be relieved to be only the thirteenth in line at a hospital. We were actually taken care of pretty quickly, and it was determined again that Layla might not have the flu. The fact that her fever had broken wasn’t a good indication as it might come back.

A clean(ish) bill of health in hand, we set out to have a good weekend. So what did we do? The weather was miserable so we didn’t do much. We shopped, we played, we ate, we came home.

Shopping was interesting in that we picked Layla up another toilet. She’s deathly afraid of the big blue (in our house) water closet, and even when we put the friendly bunny Miffy on the toilet seat, she’s still paralyzed. The daycare, from what I understand, are doing their best to toilet train her and have a pot with anpanman, a Japanese cartoon character, encouraging the kids to do their business. I figured it couldn’t hurt to have a similar pot at home, hopefully making her comfortable enough to want to use a toilet. So far? She’s had a lot of fun pushing the buttons that play music… not so much on actually using it.

Playing involved going to the kids’ floor in the department store and letting Layla run around and play with other kids. There’s a sample toy train track out that all kids seem to love, Layla being just one of them. She wasn’t too happy when her favourite toy train (Thomas the Tank Engine, for those keeping score) was being used by another little girl. The little girl was busy playing with two trains, and despite my telling her to wait her turn, Layla insisted on trying to get one. I, using all my cunning (and most of my Japanese skills), convinced the little girl to swap one of her trains for a caboose. Layla still wasn’t happy and tried to take the girl’s other train. She really wasn’t happy when I removed her from the toy section… screaming all the way. Fun times, indeed.

Eating was the highlight of the day. We had shabu shabu, which is lots of beef in a hot pot. Not unlike the previous two weeks of sukiyaki, shabu shabu involves thinly sliced pieces of beef that we cook ourselves in one of many kinds of broth, then dunk in sauce and eat. A new place opened up in our neighbourhood a couple weeks ago and Tamie finally didn’t refuse (at least not strongly enough) to going. It was decent, but we’ve definitely had better.

Sunday was another rainy, miserable day. Tamie had a dentist appointment in the morning, so Layla and I hung out at home before heading out to meet her in Hon-Atsugi when she finished. I was eager to hit up the Burger King there because they were offering a SEVEN patty hamburger, in honour of Microsoft releasing Windows 7. Thankfully, they were sold out when we got there so we went for lunch at a more reasonable, less beefy place.

Before lunch, we headed to the science museum to open Layla’s mind to the wonders and amazements that science has to offer. She seemed to have a good time, playing with marbles and … well, mostly marbles. I was most interested in the hand sanitizer they had available at the exit with the big sign outlining the dangers of influenza. Pandemic, much?

After lunch, we came back to Ebina and ventured back up to the kids’ floor of the department store to give Layla another opportunity to throw a tantrum… unfortunately, they were having some kind of halloween party so there were a thousand kids, all hopped up on sugar and adrenaline… I say unfortunately, not because I didn’t want Layla to get involved, rather she was too timid to go out and play. The chaos of it all seemed to wilt her spirits so we instead helped Tamie shop for a new jogging shirt that she used after we got back home.

Maybe not the most exciting weekend, but it had its moments.
