Long Long Weekend

This weekend was a long weekend with us having Monday off. When I say us, I mean Layla and I – Tamie had to work and she took Julia to the daycare provided by her office. It made the long weekend especially long, but we made the best of it.

Saturday I got to take care of Layla while Julia went to her regular daycare for the day. We played a few games at home (she beat me a number of times at Candyland) before we ended up going to a local department store where she could ride her Thomas the Tank Engine for a mere 200 yens. While there, we picked her up a pair of rollerblades – a boxed set that included a helmet as well knee, wrist and elbow pads – all for the low price of 3500 yen. Sweet deal!

After grabbing some juice, we took the blades home and she got to try them out. She wasn’t too happy when I put the knee pads on as they were too tight. It was only after I found the real knee pads that I realized she had elbow pads strapped to her legs. Whoops. Once she was all padded up, she made her way slowly down the hall while holding onto me. Her stability on rollerblades was anything but stable but she seemed to be having fun.

Layla on Blades

She did fall a few times the first time, but give the girl credit – she popped back up and continued to try. She’s made significant progress in just two days since we bought them. She’s now able to walk around the room with blades on, even starting to push a bit with her feet. It’s amazing – it took me a month to do what she’s done in less than an hour. Oh, to be a kid again.

After she got her fill of rollerblading up and down our small hallway, I took Layla for a bike ride. As she was unlocking her bike, she asked, “Can we go for a long bike ride this time?” I nodded and said she could go as far and for as long as she wanted. 15 minutes later, she was ready to go home. Instead we went to a coffee shop and had some juice and milkshakes.

We picked Julia up around 16:00 from her daycare – on the way we noticed there was a huge crowd waiting for whichever act was performing onstage in Vina Walk. Judging by the size of the crowd, it must have been someone famous. After getting the little one, we joined the crowd to see who it was. 10 minutes passed before a single girl came onstage and started belting out tunes on her piano. Julia got impatient though and I thought it best we leave.

Before heading home, I wanted to get some Corona – I knew Tamie wanted to make nachos for dinner and what goes better with nachos than some Mexican cervezas? I picked up 4, hung them on the stroller and asked Layla if she wanted to find a good dessert, which she immediately said yes to. She lead me to the sweets section of the department store and she looked over various kinds of cakes and things. She decided on some flavoured cheesecakes, so we got a box of 6. As the lady was wrapping them up, Julia started making a fuss. I tried calming her down which only made her fuss more… so I picked her up… and CRASH! So much for the beer hanging on the back of the stroller…

Luckily, three of the four beer survived. Before I had time to even check the status, there were more Japanese staff there cleaning things up and ensuring Layla didn’t go near the broken bottle. I’m sure I’ve said it before, but the level of service here is second-to-none and this was another shining example. Sure, our stroller smells like beer now, but that might actually be a step up from what it used to smell like… yah, we need a new stroller.

That night, Tamie came home to a dark room with two sleeping kids and one sleepy father. After we’d gotten home, Layla watched a bit of her new favourite show before going to take a nap. Julia made a bit of a fuss before crashing on me. They both slept for hours before Tamie got back.

Sunday, I got to take care of both girls while Tamie worked. This time, we went to the park for a couple of hours. The sun was unbearably hot again, but that didn’t stop Layla. She’s always ready to have fun at the park and she did, as always, but unlike most times this was a day of accomplishment.

Layla has conquered most of the playground equipment at the park, save for the monkey bars which she’s too small for, the rock-climbing wall which she hasn’t really tried, and the rope-block bridge. Today, she was determined to beat the bridge and much to her own surprise, she did! Once she figured out the technique (with a little help from coach Dad and Julia), she was able to do it consistently. She was so proud, almost as proud as I was.

After a full day at the park, we went home where I suggested Layla take a short nap because we were planning on meeting her Mom after Tamie got off work. Layla stubbornly refused and watched her TV show quietly. I played with Julia for a while as Layla fought to stay awake. An hour later, luckily both girls were still ok and we were off to Hon-Atsugi to meet Tamie for dinner. We had okonomiyaki at a local restaurant while Julia slept on a pillow on the floor beside us. All in all, a decent day.

Today was the last day of the three day weekend. Tamie took Julia to her office where daycare is being provided on these weekend working days so it was just Layla and I. Layla didn’t really want to do anything I suggested until I mentioned the Kids Fantasy Land on top of Daiei. Then her eyes lit up and her heart skipped a beat. I knew I’d found the right idea for the day.

After a semi-quick lunch at McDonalds, we ventured over to the kids park. The fantasy land is a giant indoor area with many blow-up bouncy slides and things, plus other goodies that Layla digs. She drive cars, plays in sandboxes and ball pits, and generally runs around having fun. Today was no exception – two hours of mayhem tuckered the poor girl out.

We left the fantasy land at 15:45, exactly one hour before Layla’s dance class was to begin. As soon as we stepped outside, Layla’s energy level dropped to nearly zero. The adrenaline she must have been running on finally ran out and she looked zonked. I took her to the grocery store to get her something to drink and an ice cream to give her a bit of a boost, and that did the trick. We headed home to eat it while we waited for the dance class.

At 16:30, we headed to the dance studio. I was worried Layla was going to fall asleep but she soldiered through it. On the way, she was walking so slowly and when I asked her what was up, she answered, “I can’t walk fast because I’m sooo tired.” Thank goodness she perked up when we got to the dance class. She was one of three students, and she was the only one to make it all the way through the 45 minute lesson without needing a rest. She was definitely having a good time with the dance teacher and I know now we made the right choice in letting her sign up for the class.

Once the class was over, I took the kid to her favourite restaurant for dinner before we came back home to meet Tamie and Julia. Layla, as tired as she was, wanted to practice rollerblading and did so. She only stopped to watch her TV show before taking a bath and going to bed.

I didn’t have a camera this fine day because I didn’t need to bring the backpack that’s been stuck to my back every weekend since Layla was born. Without a baby (or young kid) I had no need to take diapers, clothes, snacks or anything other than my wallet, keys and phone. What a great weight off my shoulders, both literally and figuratively, that is. Next week, I’ll try to bring a camera along, even without the backpack.

And so, that’s the end of this week’s tale. It was a long weekend and it was definitely a good one. Here’s hoping the next one is just as good.

Tamie-less Weekend

This weekend was Tamie’s first full weekend of having to work. I got the honour of taking care of the two little ones during that time. Actually, Julia went to daycare on Sunday so I guess you could say I have 1.5 kids for 2 days.

Sisters

Saturday was a scorcher and just opening the door outside was like opening an oven door (not that I’ve ever opened an oven door before =). What better way to spend the day than to take the kids to the park? Layla was excited to go back since she had such a great time last time I took her so how could I say no? I even took the baby carrier we bought so I could carry Julia around the park with her sister — what could go wrong?

Layla biked to the park while I pushed the stroller beside her, doing my best to shade Julia from the unrelenting sun. We did lather on sunscreen but I had my doubts that SPF 50 was strong enough. We made it to the convenience store beside the park before needing to stop for a drink, where I realized I only had 1000 yen to last the day. That’s 6 bottles of tea, or 4 bottles of tea, and Layla’s snack and yogurt drink she wanted at the convenience store. Luckily the money lasted until we got home. Barely.

At the park, there were few kids – most sensible parents probably took their children to pools, oceans or inside air conditioned theaters. The rest of us were baking their little ones in 35~40 degree heat. That didn’t stop Layla from doing her best to have a good time. She ran, jumped, climbed, and slid her way to happy. I took Julia with her for a while but the baby is like a furnace and combining that with my already sweaty chest made for two uncomfortable Estey’s. The baby carrier lasted no more than 10 minutes before I put Julia on my lap to let her cool down.

I think the lack of kids was a bit of a disappointment for Layla so I made up for in and we spent more time playing together – I took her to a gazebo so Julia could sleep in the shade and we played catch with a frisbee and a ball. Her frisbee tosses are a bit off center as she lets go a little too late – I tried to do the fatherly thing and teach her how to throw better (because I am the epitome of what a frisbee tosser should be) but she ignored me and continued to throw it away. At one point I was giving Julia some attention and I swear the frisbee hit me square in the gut at 100 miles an hour. I got to thinking she knew how to throw it and just liked seeing me chase it into the hot sun every time.

Frisbee

We did get a few visitors in our little gazebo. An old lady came by completely covered to protect herself from the sun and complaining about the heat. She offered Layla a plum before heading back out into the sun. A giant bug came by, digging through the sand but we scared him away (ie. I poked it into a direction away from us so Layla wouldn’t have a heart attack). A mother and daughter came by and after a minute of shy awkwardness the two kids played with each other. When the kid’s father showed up they headed home leaving us alone again.

A BIG bug

We took the cue from the family and decided it was a good time to head back home after a full day at the park. Layla rode her bike home while Julia rode shotgun in the stroller. We got home, turned on the A/C, drank some more tea and relaxed. Julia passed out again and not long after, Layla went to lay down for what turned out to be a 2 hour nap. Tamie called to say she was coming home just as Julia woke up, so all she heard was crying in the background – timing is everything. When Tamie got back, we had a nice meal before putting the kids to sleepbed.

Sunday, Tamie took Julia to her office where the company has set up a daycare to help employees with families cope with the weekend shift so it was just Layla and I. Tamie’s sister and father invited us for lunch so we went to meet them for unagi (eel) at a restaurant where Hamster used to work as a student. It was a good lunch and I think everyone enjoyed. Afterwards we spent some time in Isehara before eventually coming back home.

Layla was excited at home because I’ve been busy setting up an htpc so I can stream videos onto our new TV. I finally got it working well enough that she could watch her new favourite show (Hi-5) on something bigger than an ipad. Despite being tired and at one point wanting to take a nap, she bounced around the living room rambunctiously as she sang and danced with the characters on the TV until Tamie called. We met Tamie and Julia at the station and we all went for a nice family dinner.

All in all, I’d say this was a successful weekend sans Tamie. We definitely missed her, but we survived. Here’s hoping the rest of the weekends over the next 3 months are equally survivable.

Saturday Pics

Sorry, no pics for Sunday – without Julia, I had no need for a backpack (for the first time in 4+ years!) so forgot my camera at home.

Little Biker

Layla has been really getting into the biking scene, enjoying the red bike her grandparents have at their home. Her Chinni gave her the idea that she’d also have a bike in Ottawa, so for the last little while all we ever hear about is how she’s going shopping with Chinni to buy a green bike in Canada. With all the love bikes have been getting recently, I asked her if she wanted a bike fro Ebina too. The answer, unsurprisingly enough, was an emphatic yes.

On Saturday, after a long day of shopping, we headed to one shop on our way home to check out the bikes they had. Layla picked out the first bike she saw. It was blue. That was enough. She didn’t even need to try it out for size. I told her that we’d come back the next day after checking out a few other shops in the neighbourhood and she was, thankfully, satisfied with that.

Sunday came and we eventually headed out to a second shop. Layla immediately grabbed a bike and said it was the one she wanted. I asked her if she was sure she could ride it and she nodded. I chuckled as I took the bike off the shelf and put it on the floor, asking her to ride it around the small area we were in. She sat on the 14″ bike and finally realized there was no pedals. We got a sales guy to get some and she rode it around the store for a bit only to find it was a bit small for her.

She tried the 16″ bike and it was too heavy – try as she might she couldn’t move it. It wasn’t that big of a deal, though, because I don’t think the baby blue colour was her first (or second) choice. The 18″ bike the guy recommended was orange with Winnie The Pooh all over it. Surprisingly, she not only could move it but got around pretty good. I asked if she liked it and she said yes. I then asked if she wanted it and she said no. So off to a third store we went.

This time, we found a couple bikes of acceptable colours and sizes, but before our hero even tried the first one she saw something more interesting. Bike helmets! Who needs a bike when you can buy a spiffy blue bike helmet? Layla wanted to try on every helmet there, and I think she did, before finally settling on a sporty blue helmet that anyone would be proud to wear. Luckily, we also found a bike – an 18″ black one with a basket and a hand-brakes! What more could a kid ask for?

The store is about a 20 minute walk from our home and I wasn’t sure how well Layla could ride, especially after seeing her shakily get around the store. As we paid for the bike and helmet, I couldn’t help but imagine a tired, hungry Layla asking to be carried while I had to push this bike all the way home… luckily, my imagination runs wild sometimes. Once we were outside, Layla was off like a rocket. She handled that bike like a pro, flying around corners and down sidewalks – I had to run to keep up. We made it home in record time! I was impressed!

This morning she was so eager, I let her ride the bike to daycare. Even after getting off the bike she refused to take the helmet off, wanting to show everyone her cool new hat. I’m sure if I didn’t take it back home with me, she’d have worn it home when Tamie picked her up (even without the bike!).

What a kid, eh?

Long Weekend In Hakone

There was a long weekend here in Japan and we took advantage, renting a car and heading up to Hakone for the weekend. We booked a room at the Prince Hotel, showing up in the early afternoon, giving us enough time to catch a concert, check out the hotel grounds and grab some dinner.

The next day we hit up a nice breakfast, checked out the on-site aquarium (which turned out to be pretty decent), splash around in the water for a bit, summit the mountain and then get a good lunch on the lake. The sun was hot on the ground but on top of the mountain it was foggy and windy, which translated into a chilly (or refreshing, depending on who you ask) experience.

Layla fell asleep on top of the mountain, shivering in my arms. I wrapped her in my shirt, for whatever that could offer, and we took a look around while she slept. She was out for quite a while, not even waking up when we got on the cable car. It wasn’t until we were almost back at the hotel that her head popped up, eyes wide open and she said without missing a beat “Not windy anymore! No more chilly!”

The Golden Week That Was

Golden Week has just ended and I am sick. Not sick of having time off, just getting over a feverish, stuffy-headed cold.

A quick recap of the events, more for my memory than anything else:

Saturday – Hospitals. Lots of hospitals. Both Layla and Tamie are getting healthy and news is looking good on all counts. Thank goodness for that.

Sunday – Spent the day in Ebina, looking around. We headed to a park with a 75m slide, found a temple we knew nothing about, and hit up Starbucks for our weekly(?) fraps.

Monday – Went clam-digging with the in-laws. About a million other people had the same idea and we were stuck in a huge crowd – luckily the ocean is large and we all fit. Layla decided she wasn’t afraid of the ocean anymore and ended up having a blast. I think this is where I got sick.

Tuesday – Headed down to Enoshima for the first aquarium/beach visit of the season. Enjoyed the dolphin show with another million people – Layla didn’t cry and was quite proud of the fact. I was quite proud later when we left the aquarium and she wanted to play on the beach, fearless of the waves that petrified her only a year ago.

Wednesday – Went to an outlet mall in Minami-Machida called Grandberry Mall. Found out that I’m too big for even the XL pants. Shamed and sick, I went to bed early this night.
